What Do We Focus on?
Making Learning Fun
Scoil Íosagáin has adopted many initiatives and programmes designed to enhance infant education for our pupils. These initiatives have proven to be very successful and are very popular with our pupils.
Aistear – the early childhood curriculum framework – celebrates early childhood as a time of being, and of enjoying and learning from experiences as they unfold. It focuses on developing and nurturing the types of learning that are important in the early years. It places a strong emphasis on learning through play and exploration.
Another initiative our pupils are particularly enthusiastic about is Literacy Lift Off. This provides the pupils with lots of opportunities to read books at their own level, which gradually increase the level of what they can achieve in both reading and writing.
All initiatives complement the implementation of the national curriculum, as laid down by the Department of Education, which Scoil Íosagáin implements in full. This curriculum aims to provide a broad learning experience and encourages a rich variety of approaches to teaching and learning that cater to the different needs of individual children.
The curriculum is presented in seven areas, some of which are further subdivided into subjects. These are:
- Language: Gaeilge and English
- Social, environmental and scientific education (SESE): history, geography and science
- Arts education: visual arts, music and drama
- Physical education
- Social, personal and health education (SPHE)
- Religious education
Health & Wellbeing
Scoil Íosagáin is also an Active School, striving to promote a physically educated and physically active school community. We also pursue the Healthy Schools Programme, promoting a healthy lunch policy as well as engaging in Social and Personal Development programmes to develop positive self-esteem in our pupils.

This dream would not have been realised without the work and support of our Parents’ Association. We are planning on creating a sensory garden space this year.
